Kiss the Rain

Pitter, patter. Pitter patter.

Droplets of rain tapped continuously on the closed window next to his bed, and he heard your comforting voice. It cools him off.

"I like the rain," you said, extending your hand mid air as if to catch those tiny droplets.

Levi merely hummed in response, his attention solely focused on you.

"It's so comforting, especially when I'm with you," your eyes flicked to his.

Levi caught his breathe. He was extremely fascinated at you, as you were at the rain. This was a side of you only he was allowed to see; to know. The others view you as calm, sometimes hyper-active soldier, but Levi thought you were an odd one. If Hanji loved titans so much she talked to it like they were her babies, you loved nature as if it was the only beautiful thing in this devastated world. You were like a child, so much innocence overflowing in you that he could forget how crucial the situation human kind was in.

"Levi?"

The rain really did comfort them.

"Levi!"

He stirred out of his thoughts, finally found his peace of mind. He gave you his rare smile, staring at you with his grey eyes shining silver.

A side of Levi only you were allowed to see; to know. You loved how he shared his emotions to you. It made you feel special, and you could care less if the titans suddenly broke out of those three damn walls. You could stay here forever with Levi, enjoying the rain.

Oh how great that idea would be. If only...

Eyes turning misty, you broke eye contact and focused on the racing droplets of rain. "Levi," you whispered. "I love you."

"I love you, too." He answered without hesitation.

That was all you wanted to hear.

You both laid there in each others' arms, a peaceful silence—unspoken love—between the two of you, until the rain slowly came to a stop. That was the last time you inhaled such fresh, earthly after-rain scent. A blooming sensation flowed in your chest, and you were ready.

"I told you, you should stay with my squad!"

"Levi."

"You're coming with me."

"No."

Levi gritted his teeth. "I am you supe—"

"No." You rolled your eyes and mounted your horse. "Levi, seriously, I'm going to be fine."

"But—"

"Go to the Commander, brat." You put your best Levi-tone and glared at him, to which he returned with a sneer.

He grumbled. "Fine, but I'm going to you if—"

You didn't let him finish and crashed your lips to his.

"You have to stop cutting me off," he grumbled when you pulled away, but you only gave him a smirk. He thought you were going to leave, but you inhaled deeply, to which he imitated, and breathed:

"Rain's gonna come soon."

That was the last time he saw you.

Droplets of rain tapped on the closed window next to his bed. It irritated him. He heard your comforting voice. You seemed so distant, so far away.

"I like the rain," you had said.

Once, he liked it, too. Especially when you were with him. He missed how you marveled at how amazing the rain was, watering the crops and giving water to the earth, and all those bullshit. How wide your eyes were whenever you clapped your hands under the rain. It was like you and the rain were one.

The rain. It mocked him.

You had said a rain was going to come soon. It did. It passed by, and took you with it. How could he smile again? You were gone, just like how the soil sips the water.

Was he even right? He didn't know anymore. All he could remember was how your eyes had turned misty.

Misty as the rain now. It wasn't as beautiful as it was before. He knew that after the rain, it wouldn’t smell as fresh as it had been with you. It would smell like the ozone, suffocating him with his bitterness.

But you were the rain.
